SPOTS INSTALLATION

The world's biggest urban media art display...

The 1800m2 SPOTS light- and media installation -- an extremely short notice project commissioned in February 05 and inaugurated in November 2005 -- transforms an empty office high rise building at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin into one of the biggest media art works in the world. As part of an overall marketing conception -- which was developed by the Hamburg based marketing agency "Café Palermo" -- the installation is supposed to create a "sexy" communicative image of the rather poor investor driven architecture. In this way the client hopes to find a potential tenant for over 20.000m2 empty office space in one of Berlin's most exclusive locations.

Technically the installation itself is similar to the BIX project for the Kunsthaus in Graz: a field of 1800 fluorescent light tubes serves as a pixel matrix of a giant low-resolution grey scale display. Each light tube can be switched and dimmed individually by a central computer.

In this way simple images and video sequences can be shown on the façade.

While the BIX installation in Graz is a carrier for art projects only the SPOTS installation needs to go a step further. Although the installation is reserved for artistic productions mainly the client needs to refinance part of the production costs by screening corporate commercials as well. In order to avoid the typical antagonistic 'side by side' of art and commercials the SPOTS installation serves as a platform for a new communication format fusing artistic and corporate communication. As part of a curated program artists will be coupled with some of the most courageous global enterprises to develop an artistic re-interpretation of their ubiquitous marketing slogans: "Where do you want to go today?", "Life is Random", "Vorsprung durch Technik" ....

MoodWall

The Moodwall is a pilot project for a 70 meter long media wall proposal by Urban Alliance which won a competition for ideas to improve the public space of the social unsafe area of the Amsterdam Bijlmer.

The Moodwall is situated in a pedestrian tunnel and interacts with people. The interactive urban wallpaper is built out of about 2500 leds behind a ribbed semi-transparent wall.

Urban Alliance specializes in media objects in which state of the art media techniques are integrated in architecture and design. Their mission is to integrate modern communication technologies in the built environment in order to create interactive public spaces and objects.

Urban Alliance partner Illuminate Interactive Media created the sensor system that makes the wall react to pedestrians and designed the visual content in collaboration with Visual Interactive Designer Matthias Oostrik.

Uniqa Tower, Viena

The exterior of the Uniqa Tower in Vienna has been equipped with a LED-grid, a wide-meshed net of picture elements capable of receiving video-data, which are fitted into the building’s facade. At first, the electronic data corresponds to the architectural structure of the tower, but during the course of its choreography, repeatedly detaches itself from the concrete shape of the building, establishing new spaces which dynamically interweave

From the 24th of September until the 11th of October 2009, the iconic Liberty Hall building in Dublin’s city centre will be transformed into a giant 50 metre, low resolution, TV screen. Members of the public are invited to create animations with sound and music, via our website, and broadcast them across the city’s skyline.

The project “Jump” is focusing on mapped video projection with a strict reference to architectural structure. The house front has been rebuilt in a studio setting with a proportion of 1:1,4. The setup becomes a stage for artists and performers. Later the captured video content is projected on the building.

The „screen“ facade is formed by a tessellated pattern made up by physical plastic bodies. A regular matrix of fluorescent lamps is superimposed onto (into) this idiosyncratic physical structure. That produces a display screen, which however is vividly distorted by the strong geometry of the individual light fixture and which is peppered by the regular perforations of the physical screen as well as by variations in the arrangements of the light fixture objects.

By intention a complex and ambivalent impression. On one side there is the impression of an ultra large media screen, which is not yet fully there. It appears to be still deep frozen under a surface of ice, cracking and thawing. A herald of a fundamental change of architecture, which is about to transform from a static to a dynamic art.

On the other side the individual blinking crystals carry a strong reminiscence to the look of the “modern city” of the 20th century. The idea of “entertainment” linked to flashing neon signs and excessive baroque carpets of light bulbs with its on-off moving aesthetic.

Because there will be change. Being the first development inside the new officially promoted Bugis night life area of Singapore the project anticipates the arrival of several competitors over the next 15 years. Instead of starting a race in latest tech LED glamour, which the project would soon loose to its younger competitors the project concentrates on establishing a superb size and lighting power in combination with a striking visual appearance thereby building the claim of becoming the areas first and lasting land mark.

Ao vivo, a sua música, mistura de pós-punk na esteira das ESG com pós-tribalismo na peugada de M.I.A., ganha contornos de celebração colorida, efusiva, vigorosa. Com ela e com os Buraka Som Sistema, a noite está ganha, a Sudoeste.

São 7:41 da manhã.

O solzinho lá fora já parece de meio-dia, ou sou eu que ando com os horários completamente trocados.

O gato mia para ir para o terraço. Se tivesse mal disposto, tinha-lhe atirado com a almofada e posto fora do quarto, mas não. Hoje não.

Os grilos lá fora hoje e agora são violinos.

Ainda em casa, já me vejo a chegar à faculdade e subir com as folhas de entrega e a espetá-las com o alfinete na parede, por uma última vez (espero).

Tomei o pequeno almoço mais devagar de sempre. Sem pressas, sem correria.

Pela primeira vez posso admitir que uma (última?) entrega me correu mesmo bem.

Tudo parece calmo de repente. Até a música no meu computador está desligada.

Não se ouve nada. Só a ventoinha quase inaudível.

Só espero pelo último almoço daqui a umas horas no bar para finalizar este ano estranhamente ausente e diferente.

Sem mais demoras, sabiam que este blog fez 5 anos no passado dia 12? E que já não vou ao cinema desde.. Janeiro??

Ebony of My Heart.

Não dá pa descolar deste álbum.. W.A.R.R.I.O.R. começa bem. Agressiva, dá para uma boa intro. Os trompetes de We know all about you anunciam nova investida nos rufos tribais, mas é Story of St. Ockwell que eleva ao orgasmo. São 2:30 de pura cocada. É uma M.I.A., é a tribo do Zimbabué. Eu sei lá o que é. Vou-me vir no Sudoeste nesta.

A já conhecida The Muzik é impecável. É pura discosound.. Os gritinhos de Ebony são imagem de marca.

In G.O.D. We trust faz-me lembrar Santogold. E nisso não há nada de mal a apontar, porque Ebony sabe dar o seu toque pessoal. Bone of My Bones é um tema acústico que antecede Guess We'll Always Have NY, aquela faixa violada (com viola) que apetece erguer o isqueiro e gritar o refrão que fica na cabeça "i guess we'll always have new york"..

Confesso que preferia a outra versão de I'm Your Future Ex-Wife.. Esta parece muita calminha para o festim que vem de trás. When it Rains roça ali um Basement Jaxx, o que é, mais uma vez, fantástico pela maneira como o toque pessoal faz a diferença.

A apoteose chega com a já conhecida Don't Fart on My Heart (não te peides no meu coração). Sem palavras. É fenomenal e a melhor maneira de encerrar este magnifíco álbum de estreia. Melhor melhor é a faixa bónus no final que começa com um berimbau. Soa é a pouco. Afinal são só dez músicas.. Não digo que não modificava uma coisa ou outra, mas para esta artista em ascensão, Bone Of My Bones é o melhor cartão de visita que se podia esperar.

Proj 5 ou o início de uma dissertação

No meio de tanta experimentação, acho que encontrei um denominador comum nos meus projectos: a procura de uma dinâmica.

Não estou a falar de edifícios rotativos, mas sim de algo que espelhe uma sociedade hoje em dia em constante movimento, de fluxos ,

O meu projecto do 2º ano é um reflexo máximo desta tentativa de dinâmica, que agora retomei para o projecto urbano. Procurar uma dinâmica de implantação, de uma desordem ordenada, de um equilíbrio estático de um movimento que percorre o terreno em estudo.

Inconscientemente há aqui qualquer coisa de Mies. O Seagram Building e o recuo que faz relativamente à rua é notório no meu projecto (laguinho não incluído), que resulta num qualificado espaço público permitindo respirar os edifícios. O espaço público caracteriza-se pelas sucessivas plataformas que diferem entre percurso/caminho e esplanada/praça dos edifícios de escritórios/comércio e restauração.

Acho que comecei a ter umas luzes para uma dissertação.
